Description

Zelnorm (generic name: tegaserod; brand names include: Tagon-6 / Zelmac) is used for the management of irritable bowel syndrome and constipation. It was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration to help relieve the abdominal discomfort, bloating and constipation associated with irritable bowel syndrome. Its use was also approved to treat chronic idiopathic constipation.

Zelnorm is used for short term treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in women who have constipation as their main symptom. It is also used for treating certain men and women who have a type of chronic constipation.

Zelnorm is a selective serotonin receptor agonist. It works on the nerves of the bowel to improve bowel function. Zelnorm works by improving muscle movement and increasing production of fluid in the bowels.

Use in elderly patients is not recommended and should be restricted to women below the age of 55.

Zelnorm is non-addictive.
